Kamala Satpathy (born on 1 July 1963) is a homemaker who got the Kendriya Sahitya Akademi award in 2022. She has made a name in the Odia literary circle despite being based out of Mumbai for over 37 years. Till date, she has 25 books published in multiple languages, over 700 short stories and 300 poems, 280 columns in various newspapers, 24 novels, and has also written 20 dramas. Her stories have been translated into various languages like Hindi, Marathi, English, Telugu, and Kannada.
Besides receiving the Kendra Sahitya Akademi award for translating the book Suneli Badal, she has received many other awards for her work in the literary field. These include the Odisha Lekhika Sansad Samman, sudhanya galpa samman, Kalinga Book Fair Samman, Subarta Shrestha Kabi Samman, Sagarika Galpa Samman, Subrat Rath Smaraki Puraskar of Gangadhara Rath Foundation, Daksha Upanyasa Puraskar, Rajdhani Book Fair Samman, and many more.
Kamala Satpathy has had a long history with the Marathi language and literature. It started with being invited as a guest editor for the 2007 Diwali issue of Akantha magazine by Dr. Ram Pandit and Mr. Ranganath Chormule. This special issue was dedicated to Odia literature and culture. It covered everything from local festivals to the various traditions around Lord Jagannath. It also included 32 stories starting from the first-ever Odia short story ‘Rebati’ to stories from current crop of writers, over 60 poems, and interviews of three Jnanpith Award winners of that time. Furthermore, it contained a list of Odia Kendriya Sahitya Akademi winners along with their work (till 2006), and the Odisha Rashtra Geet (in Odia and Devnagiri).
She has also translated famous Marathi writer Shantaram’s book ‘Jatra’ into Odia, along with many other writers, including Mama Varerkar, Āchārya Atre, VP Kale, GA Kulkarni, Pu.la. Deshpande, Kusumagraj, Jyotsna Devdhar, Asha Bage, Saniya, Priya Tendulkar, Vijay Tendulkar, Vinda Karandikar, Gangadhar Gopal Gadgil, madhu mangesh karnik, and many more. Very soon all this work will be collated and published as a single book. Her own stories (18) have been translated into Marathi, and published in a book called Sartya Basantache Goshti. She is the editor and publisher of odia writer padmashree Binapani Mohanty's Urdu translated book. Also the editor and publisher of 16 odia lady writer's stories in Marathi, named Swayamprabha.
In 2010, she was invited as an Odia writer to the platinum jubilee function of the Mumbai Marathi Sahitya Sangha. It is here that she met writers from various languages, including Telugu writer Janardan Ambala, on who’s request she translated their book into Odia. She was also introduced to another famous Telugu writer Syed Saleem, who’s works she has translated into Odia. Of this, the translation of the book Suneli Badal won her the 2022 Kendriya Sahitya Akademi translation award.
Recently, she has translated ‘Smarangatha’ by Gopal Neelkanth Dandekar, which will soon be published by the Odisha Sahitya Akademi.
Besides writing, she also spends her time as an editor for Taapoi – annual magazine of Bombay Odia Women’s Association (BOWA). She has directed many stage dramas, and is a dubbing artist. She has also been frequently invited by Doordarshan Mumbai, All India Radio Mumbai and Cuttack to discuss Odia and Marathi literature and culture.
To empower women she is giving training of stitching, crocheting, bedsheet and saree printing, pot making, tie and dye free of charge through the Bombay odia women's association.
She has written 21 novels, which has been published in the puja issues of odisha. Out of this 6 has been published as books. And some more are in the line. Her novels are very popular among the readers for its subject and lucidity. Among these 4 novels are based on Mumbai life. They are Hi Mumbai, Salam Mumbai, Maya nagari kole and adhakanthi ghara. All four are well appreciated by the readers.
Besides this she has been writing, directing and producing odia dramas for last many years to encourage housewives and to keep the odia culture alive in the metropoly.
କମଳା ଶତପଥୀ (ଜନ୍ମ: ୧ ଜୁଲାଇ ୧୯୬୩) ଜଣେ ଓଡ଼ିଆ ଲେଖିକା, ଗାଳ୍ପିକା, କବି, ଔପନ୍ୟାସିକା ତଥା ଅନୁବାଦିକା । ୨୦୨୨ ମସିହାରେ ତାଙ୍କୁ ଅନୁବାଦ ସାହିତ୍ୟରେ କେନ୍ଦ୍ର ସାହିତ୍ୟ ଏକାଡେମୀ ପୁରସ୍କାର ମିଳିଥିଲା । ସୟଦ୍ ସଲିମ୍ଙ୍କ ରଚିତ ତେଲୁଗୁ ଉପନ୍ୟାସ ଭେନ୍ଦି ମେଘମ୍ର ଓଡ଼ିଆ ଅନୁବାଦ ସୁନେଲି ବାଦଲ ପାଇଁ ତାଙ୍କୁ ଏହି ପୁରସ୍କାର ମିଳିଥିଲା ।
୧୯୬୩ ମସିହାର ଜୁଲାଇ ୧ ତାରିଖରେ ଖଇରାପଡ଼ା, ବାରଙ୍ଗଠାରେ ଜନ୍ମଗ୍ରହଣ କରିଥିଲେ ସେ । ଦର୍ଶନରେ ସ୍ନାତକୋତ୍ତର କରିବା ପରେ ସେ ସଚ୍ଚିଦାନନ୍ଦ ଶତପଥୀଙ୍କୁ ବିବାହ କରି ୧୯୮୬ ମସିହାରୁ ନବୀ ମୁମ୍ବଈରେ ରହି ଆସୁଛନ୍ତି । ଏହି ଦମ୍ପତିଙ୍କର ଗୋଟିଏ ପୁଅ ଓ ଗୋଟିଏ ଝିଅ ଅଛନ୍ତି ।
ଛୋଟବେଳୁ ସେ ଲେଖାଲେଖି ପ୍ରତି ଆକୃଷ୍ଟ ହୋଇଥିଲେ ଏବଂ ସେହି ସମୟରେ ଶିଶୁପତ୍ରିକା ମାନଙ୍କରେ କିଛି କିଛି କାହାଣୀ ପ୍ରକାଶିତ ହୋଇଥିଲା ତାଙ୍କର । ବିବାହ ପରେ ମୁମ୍ବାଇରେ ରହିବା ଆରମ୍ଭ କରଲେ ଏବଂ ୧୯୮୭ ମସିହାରେ ତାଙ୍କର ପ୍ରଥମ କାହାଣୀ ସୁଚରିତାରେ ପ୍ରକାଶିତ ହୋଇ ଉଚ୍ଚ ପ୍ରଶଂସିତ ହୋଇଥିଲା । ତା’ପରେ ମଧ୍ୟ ଅନେକ କାହାଣୀ ଅନ୍ୟାନ୍ୟ ପତ୍ରପତ୍ରିକାରେ ପ୍ରକାଶିତ ହୋଇଛି ଏବଂ ପାଠକୀୟ ଆଦୃତି ବି ପାଇଛି, ତେବେ ସେସବୁର ସଂଖ୍ୟା ଯଥେଷ୍ଟ କମ୍। ତେବେ ୧୯୯୯ ମସିହା ପରେ ସାହିତ୍ୟ କ୍ଷେତ୍ରରେ ସଂମ୍ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣ ଚଳଚଞ୍ଚଳ ହୋଇ ରହିଛନ୍ତି । ୭୦୦ରୁ ଉର୍ଦ୍ଧ୍ୱ କାହାଣୀ, ୩୨୫ରୁ ଉର୍ଦ୍ଧ୍ୱ କବିତା, ୨୧ଟି ଉପନ୍ୟାସ ତଥା ଅନେକ ନିବନ୍ଧ ବିଭିନ୍ନ ପତ୍ରପତ୍ରିକା, ସମ୍ବାଦପତ୍ର ଆଦିରେ ପ୍ରକାଶିତ ହୋଇ ପାଠକଙ୍କ ଦ୍ୱାରା ଆଦୃତି ଲାଭ କରିଛି । ସତ୍ୟବାଦୀ, ଦିଗ୍ ବଳୟ, କାଦମ୍ବିନୀ, କଥା, ଝଙ୍କାର, ଦୀକ୍ଷା, ଅମୃତାୟନ, କଥା କଳିକା, ରେବତୀ, ଶୁଭପଲ୍ଲବ, ମହୁରି, ସୁଧନ୍ୟା, ସୁବାର୍ତ୍ତା, ପ୍ରମେୟ, ସମ୍ବାଦ ଆଦି ଓଡ଼ିଶାର ସୁନାମଧନ୍ୟ ପତ୍ରପତ୍ରିକାରେ ତାଙ୍କର ଲେଖା ନିୟମିତ ପ୍ରକାଶିତ ହେଇଆସୁଛି । ଲେଖାଲେଖି ବ୍ୟତୀତ ସେ ଜଣେ ଡବିଂ କଳାକାର ଏବଂ ମଞ୍ଚ ନିର୍ଦ୍ଦେଶିକା ଭାବରେ କାମ କରିବା ସହିତ ମହିଳାମାନଙ୍କୁ ଆର୍ଟ ଆଣ୍ଡ୍ କ୍ରାଫ୍ଟର ପ୍ରଶିକ୍ଷଣ ଦିଅନ୍ତି ।
ଜଣେ ଅନୁବାଦିକା ଭାବରେ ସେ କ୍ୟାନସର୍ ନୁହେଁ ଅସାଧ୍ୟ ବେମାରି, ଜୀବନର ସତ୍ୟତା, ଯାତ୍ରା, ଧ୍ୱଂସ ତଳର ଜୀବନ, ରାଣୀର କାହାଣୀ, ମରୁପୁଷ୍ପ, ସ୍ମରଣଗାଥା ଆଦି ପୁସ୍ତକକୁ ଓଡ଼ିଆରେ ଅନୁବାଦ କରିଛନ୍ତି । ତାଙ୍କ ନିଜସ୍ୱ କାହାଣୀ ହିନ୍ଦୀ ଆଉ ମରାଠୀ ଭାଷାରେ ଅନୁବାଦ କରାଯାଇ ପୁସ୍ତକ ପ୍ରକାଶିତ ହୋଇଛି । ସମ୍ପାଦିକା ଓ ସଙ୍କଳିକା ଭାବରେ ସିଏ କିଛି ଓଡିଆ ଲେଖିକାଙ୍କର କାହାଣୀ ସବୁକୁ ମରାଠୀରେ ଅନୁବାଦ କରେଇ "ସରତ୍ୟା ବସନ୍ତଚ୍ୟା ଗୋଷ୍ଠୀ" ପ୍ରକାଶିତ କରେଇଛନ୍ତି । ବୀଣାପାଣି ମହାନ୍ତିଙ୍କର କାହାଣୀର ଉର୍ଦ୍ଦୁ ଅନୁବାଦ କରେଇ ପ୍ରକାଶିତ କରେଇଛନ୍ତି । ତାଙ୍କ ନିଜର ଅନେକ କାହାଣୀ ଅନ୍ୟମାନଙ୍କ ଦ୍ୱାରା ମରାଠୀ, ହିନ୍ଦୀ, କନ୍ନଡ଼, ତେଲୁଗୁ ଏବଂ ଇଂରାଜୀ ଆଦି ଭାଷାରେ ଅନୁବାଦ ହୋଇ ପତ୍ରପତ୍ରିକାରେ ପ୍ରକାଶିତ ହୋଇ ପାଠକୀୟ ସ୍ୱୀକୃତି ପାଇପାରିଛି ।

ଏହା ବ୍ୟତୀତ ସେ ବମ୍ବେ ଓଡ଼ିଆ ଓମେନସ୍ ଆସୋସିଏସନ୍ (ମୁମ୍ବାଇ), ବମ୍ବେ ଓଡ଼ିଆ ମହାସଙ୍ଘ, ବ୍ରଜଗୌରୀ ଟ୍ରଷ୍ଟ୍ ମହାରାଷ୍ଟ୍ର ୱେଲ୍ ଫେୟାର୍ ଆସୋସିଏସନ୍ (ମୁମ୍ବାଇ), ଉତ୍କଳ ସମିତି (ମୁମ୍ବାଇ), କଟକ ଲାୟନ୍ସ କ୍ଲବ ଓ ମଧୁସୂଦନ ପାଠାଗାର, ବୋଆ ଭୁବନେଶ୍ୱର, ସୁଲେଖା ସାହିତ୍ୟ ସଂସଦ, ଶିଳାଲିପି ସାହିତ୍ୟ ସଂସଦ, ଅନୁଗୁଳ ମହିଳା କଲେଜ, ଓଡ଼ିଶା ଲେଖିକା ସଂସଦ ଭଳି ମାନ୍ୟଗଣ୍ୟ ସଂଗଠନ ତରଫରୁ ସମ୍ମାନିତ ହୋଇଛନ୍ତି ।
